• thick new mortar layer applied over old layer 

3. RECESSED POINTING 
• 5mm recess is provided 

4. STRUCK POINTING 
• 10 mm inside 5.

TOOLS USED IN PLASTERING 

1. trowel 
• to apply mortar between 2 course 
• Bullnose trowel : apply on external surface 
• Pointed trowel : corners 

2. Float : to check verticality 

• Screed : small projections constructed for plastering purpose 

Defects in plastering 

1. Blistering : swelling out of small patches 

2. Crack : formation of air cracks 

3. Efflorescence : presence of algae / alkalis 

4. Crazing : extended air cracks over a large surface 

5. Flaking : formation of loose materials 

6. Pealing : pealing out of plastered surface 

7. Rust stain : reaction of iron materials with mortar
